Not every garage door problem is an emergency. Some are. Knowing the difference saves you from paying for after-hours timing you do not need, and it keeps you from living with a door that is not safe. Here is how we sort the calls we get from St. George, Washington City, Hurricane, Ivins and Santa Clara.
Call for same-day help
These are the problems where waiting makes things worse or leaves you stuck:
- The car is trapped inside and you need it today for work, a flight, or an appointment.
- The door is stuck open and the house would be unsecured overnight. An open garage is often an open door into the house.
- A spring snapped and the door is hanging partway up. A door stuck mid-travel can drop.
- A cable is off or broken and the door sits crooked in the opening.
- The door is off its track or a panel is bent out of the opening.
- The door came down on something and is now jammed or damaged.
For these, stop using the door and call 435-773-8856. Same-day is the goal during normal hours when a technician and parts are available. Evenings and weekends are a request, quoted on the call. If we cannot get there today, we say so and give you the next window.
Can usually wait for a normal appointment
These are annoying, but safe if the door is balanced and closes all the way:
- One remote stopped working but the wall button still works
- The keypad quit and you still have a remote
- The door is noisy but moves smoothly
- Daylight or dust under the door from a worn bottom seal
- The opener light burned out or the door is a little slow
- A small dent in one panel that does not change how it runs
Book these during the week. There is no reason to pay for after-hours timing. Helpful pages: noisy garage door, weather seals, and keypads, remotes and sensors.
The gray area
Some problems sit in the middle. These questions help you decide:
- Can you close the door all the way and lock the house? If yes, it can usually wait until morning.
- Does the door move smoothly by hand? If it feels very heavy or sticks, treat it as urgent and do not force it.
- Is it getting worse each time? A door that reverses more often, or makes a new grinding sound, is a warning. Stop using it and book soon.
- Is anyone at risk? Kids or pets around a door that is acting up moves it up the list.
A door that will not close because of a sensor is a good example. It is often a dirty lens or a bumped bracket, which you can check yourself. If you cannot fix it and the house would be open overnight, it becomes urgent. See garage door won't open: what to check.
Heat changes the timing here
In a St. George summer, a closed garage with a dead door gets very hot. Pets, groceries, and anything stored in there need a plan. A broken spring in July with the only car inside is more urgent than the same spring in January with a second car in the driveway. Give us the details on the call and we will help you decide.
What to do while you wait
- Leave a door with a broken spring or loose cable where it is
- Do not keep pressing the remote
- Unplug the opener if the door is down and stable
- If the garage door is stuck open, lock the door between the garage and the house, and do not force the garage door down
- Keep people and cars out from under the door

FAQ
Is a broken garage door spring an emergency?
It is urgent if the car is stuck inside, the house is open, or the door is hanging partway up. If the door is down and you have another way to get around, it can often wait for the next normal appointment. Either way, stop using the door.
Can a noisy garage door wait?
Usually yes, if it still moves smoothly and closes all the way. A new grinding or popping sound is worth a call soon, because it can come before a part fails.
Do you offer after-hours garage door repair?
You can request evening or weekend service by calling 435-773-8856. It is quoted on the call. It is not a staffed 24/7 shop, and if we cannot come tonight we will say so.
My door will not close. Is that urgent?
Check the safety sensors first. If cleaning and aiming them does not work and the house would be open overnight, call for same-day help.
What should I tell you when I call?
Your city, whether the door is up or down, what you heard or saw, and whether a car is trapped. That is enough for an honest answer and a free estimate.
