Symptoms of a broken spring
- A single loud bang from the garage, often at night or when the door moved
- Door will not open, or opens a few inches and stops
- Opener motor runs and the door barely moves
- Door looks crooked or one side hangs
- Visible gap in the spring coil on the shaft above the door
That is the most common garage door repair call in St. George. Heat cycles and daily use fatigue the wire. When one torsion spring breaks, the other is usually the same age — replace the pair.
Up north, springs often snap on the first hard freeze. In St. George they fail on cycle life and heat. Summer highs over 100°F, west- and south-facing doors, and red-rock dust in the hardware all shorten spring life. A household that uses the garage as the front door will wear a standard spring in a few years whether it freezes or not.
Torsion springs sit on the bar above the door (most newer St. George, Washington Fields, and Coral Canyon homes). Extension springs stretch along the tracks (more common on older Santa Clara and some Hurricane stock). Either type is a technician job — do not wind them yourself.
The fix
Match the wire size and wind the correct turns for your door weight. Replace worn cables if they took the hit. Balance the door so it stays halfway on its own. Reset opener force so the motor is not lifting a dead door. Most spring jobs are done in one visit when the correct springs are on the truck.
Extension-spring doors (springs along the side tracks) get a matched pair plus safety cables. Common on older stock around town; torsion is more common on newer St. George and Washington builds.
See cable repair if the cable is frayed or off the drum, and opener repair if the motor already strained.
Safety
Do not try to wind a torsion spring. Do not use the opener to “help” a door with a snapped spring. Disconnect the opener if you must leave the door shut and wait. Details in the FAQ.
